The Old Point Loma Lighthouse is located at the tip of Point Loma Peninsula in San Diego, California. It was built in 1854 and was used until 1891 when a new lighthouse was built. The new lighthouse was built because the Old Point Loma Lighthouse was built high on a hill and fog would often rise and block its light. The old lighthouse is now part of the Cabrillo National Monument, a scenic park that honors Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. Cabrillo was the first European to explore the west coast of North America. (3-page lesson)
