  • The dogwood is the state flower and state tree of Virginia.

  • The wood of the dogwood is hard and strong.

  • The blooms have four parts and grow in clusters.


Cardinal - State Bird of Virginia

Northern Cardinal

  • Virginia's state bird is the cardinal. Cardinals are also called redbirds.

  • Cardinals are medium sized songbirds. They are 8.3 to 9 inches (21-23 centimeters) long.

  • In the United States, it is illegal to keep a cardinal in a cage as a pet.


Mount Vernon - Home of George and Martha Washington

Mount Vernon

  • Mount Vernon was the home of George and Martha Washington.

  • George Washington was the first president of the United States.

  • Mount Vernon is now a museum. Visitors can tour the mansion, slave quarters, kitchen, stables, greenhouse, and gardens.
