Alaska became the 49th U.S. state on January 3, 1959. It is located northwest of Canada and it doesn't touch any other U.S. state. The capital of Alaska is Juneau and the state's postal abbreviation is AK. Alaska was purchased from Russia in 1867. It is the largest of the fifty states and is famous for cold weather, snow, glaciers, Eskimos, igloos, dog races, and long nights. Alaska is called "The Last Frontier" or "Land of the Midnight Sun".   • It shares an international border with Canada. Like Hawaii, it does not touch any other U.S. state.

  • It has eight stars: seven of them form the Big Dipper and the eighth is the North Star.
  • The flag of Alaska was designed in 1927 by a thirteen year old boy named Benny Benson.
