Alaska became the 49th U.S. state on January 3, 1959. It is located northwest of Canada and it doesn't touch any other U.S. state. The capital of Alaska is Juneau and the state's postal abbreviation is AK. Alaska was purchased from Russia in 1867. It is the largest of the fifty states and is famous for cold weather, snow, glaciers, Eskimos, igloos, dog races, and long nights. Alaska is called "The Last Frontier" or "Land of the Midnight Sun".
