Cesar Chavez National Holiday Online Campaign
Many of our ESL students are from Mexico, and they may enjoy using a computer and the Internet to promote a civics cause that asks Congress to make March 31 a national holiday in honor of labor leader Cesar Chavez.
This simple democracy in action task can be completed by having students go to the United Farm Workers website and completing a brief form which asks for their email address, first name, last name, and zip code. This is an easy way for students, who are willing and believe in this movement, to participate in the civics traditions of the United States by calling on the U.S. Congress to implement a change to public policy.
This new national holiday would also include a Cesar Chavez day of service-learning and community action. I've added a page to this website on Chavez and will be adding another on United Farm Workers co-founder Dolores Huerta soon.
I call on other ESL bloggers and website owners to add blog posts or educational units on Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta.
